Fondly remembered for his role in Chashme Buddoor and cult comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, actor Ravi Baswani died on 27 July 2010 at Haldwani, Uttarakhand. A fantastic actor he had a brilliant sense of comic timing. In his brief acting career he was successful in creating a space for himself in tinsel town. His death marked a sad day for the entire Bollywood industry.
Born and brought up in a Jat family in Delhi, actor Ravi Baswani was alumnus of Kirori Mal College (KMC), Delhi University. He was a talented actor from beginning and was associated with KMC dramatic society at the college. After working for almost two years as Marketing Executive he decided to switch to acting owing to his lack of job satisfaction. Son of Dr. Balram Singh Baswani & Smt. Shringar Kaur he remained unmarried till his death.
Professional Acting Career
A happy and generous person Ravi Baswani was friend of Naseeruddin Shah. He was so amused with the script of famous movie Sparsh that offered unconditional assistance to the director Sai Paranjpye. At the set he would handle Properties for the film. His theatre group (called “Non-Group”!) became closely involved with behind-the-scenes work. Impressed by his skill Paranjpye gave him break in her next venture Chashme Baddoor, which was a turning point of his life.
After wining accolades for doing justice with the Jai Lakhanpal in Chashme Baddoor (1981) he gave another memorable performance as the high-strung photographer Sudhir in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro(1983). For his role in this cult comedy movie he won Filmfare Best Comedian Award in 1984. Noted for his funny expressions and comic timing he was a character in the true sense of the word. In a career spanning 30 years he acted in some 30 films.
Death
Baswani who was planning a directorial debut died following a massive heart attack on 27 July 2010 in Haldwani (Distt. Nainital). He was in the city to scout for locations for his upcoming project. His death was mourned by many including Sudhir Mishra and Kundan Shah.

I'll never understand how a great actor like Ravi Baswani never got his due in the industry. Any actor who can count chashme baddoor and Jaane bhi do Yaaron among his work, let alone as a leading man, should be considered a legend.
